Poetic Renaissance in Edo State – “The Heartbeat”
Edo State, historically known as the cradle of arts, culture, and sophisticated craftsmanship, is rising once again—not with bronze this time, but with the enduring power of words. The Battle of Stanzas is not just a competition; it is a creative uprising, a literary revival, and a cultural awakening. It symbolizes the poetic renaissance in the state widely revered as “The Heartbeat of Nigeria.”
Reclaiming Our Voice
Just as the ancient Benin Kingdom was once a hub of oral tradition, philosophy, and storytelling, this initiative seeks to reclaim and reposition Edo as a literary lighthouse in Nigeria and Africa. From the streets of Benin City to the rural enclaves, poetry is alive—it only needs a stage, a spark, and a new sense of purpose. That spark is the Battle of Stanzas by Naija Poetry Fest Community in collaboration with Benin Writers Society.
The Vision
- To inspire the next generation of writers and thinkers
- To provide platforms for emerging and established poets
- To elevate the Edo creative industry through spoken word, performance poetry, and literary expression
- To foster cultural tourism through art-based events and literary showcases
The Renaissance We Need
The poetic renaissance isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. In a time where digital noise often drowns meaningful expression, Battle of Stanzas offers a space for healing, resistance, truth, and beauty. It is a return to meaning, a restoration of pride, and a rededication to the creative soul of Edo.

Why Edo? Why Now?
- Edo has given Nigeria literary giants like Odia Ofeimun, Tanure Ojaide, and the rising wave of contemporary voices.
- Edo boasts of a rich oral and artistic tradition—from palace poetry to market chants.
- Edo has the talent, the audience, and the historical authority to lead this renaissance.
Beyond Competition
- The Battle of Stanzas is also an entry point to something more lasting:
- The launch of “Stanzas from the Bronze Capital”, a community-sourced poetry anthology
- A growing network of literary clubs, school outreaches, and writing fellowships
- The establishment of Edo as a yearly destination for literary tourism
A Renaissance Rooted in Rhythm
Poetry is not dead in Edo—it has only been waiting for a drumbeat loud enough to awaken it. The Battle of Stanzas is that drumbeat.
It is where we write, recite, and ignite.
It is where Edo’s literary voice rises again—louder, bolder, and more unforgettable.
